Course overview

This course is designed by a world-renowned leadership and public affairs consultant who has worked with political and corporate leaders across the globe. The aim of the course is to help you speak and sound like a leader.

By the end of this course, you will understand how rhetoric – the secret weapon of persuasion – is used in public speaking. You will learn with a series of practical and theoretical exercises for which you will receive personalised feedback, and an invitation to an exclusive weekly meetup.

Introduction Session

This will be a short and quick session to give you a flavour of what to expect. It will introduce you to some key themes and concepts which we will visit throughout the course.

As well as watching the introductory video, you will identify what you want to get out of this course and how it can help you by filling out a tailored questionnaire.

Module 1: Who are you – building your credibility with ethos

For this section, you will upload a short video in which you introduce yourself and reflect on who you are as a leader. This will be your first step towards establishing your ethos.

You will receive professional feedback on your recording – not only what you said, but also how you said it. You will revisit this video later on in the course to reflect on your development.

Module 2: Learning the language of leadership – rhetorical tropes

For this module, you will get to look at a famous leader’s speeches and analyse how they used rhetoric to reinforce their key messages.

After having learnt the different and dynamic forms of rhetorical repetition, you will have the opportunity to write a short script using what you have learnt.

There will be professional feedback for the second activity and an opportunity to rewrite the script with the coach’s feedback.

Module 3: Motivating through pride – pathos

For this module, you will focus on how to identify and target specific audience groups.

But why do we have to do this? It is because knowing your audience is key to giving an effective message. But more than that, if you want to take your public speaking to a whole new level, you need to know who you want to turn your audience in to.

You will work on formulating your idea of the model employee and identify strategies for motivating your current staff to become that person.

Module 4: Speeches as opportunities – be known, be present, be strong

For this module, you will be given a case study of speaking opportunities which you will get to rank in importance based on objectives and outcomes.

This is designed to get you thinking about goal-focused speaking opportunities – a skill which you can then use to reflect on your own speaking schedule.

Module 5: Framing messages – structure

For this module, you will work on restructuring one of your key messages into the Ciceronian structure.

Not only will this challenge your perception of structure, it will also get you to think about the same message from different perspectives – one of the key skills for effective modern day public speaking.

Module 6: Paralinguistic techniques

At the end of this module, you will receive professional feedback on a video of you giving a speech. This video can be whatever you choose to upload. The feedback will be focused on delivery and paralinguistic techniques.
